Newquay’s Beach Safety Event 2009

Rescue and wildlife organisations will come together for Newquay’s Beach Safety Event on Towan beach. The event aimed to promote beach safety and educate the public about the valuable work the organisations, who are often volunteers, do to keep people safe and support marine wildlife around the coast. With talks, demonstrations, rescue scenarios and information galore, the day promises to be a big success.

Sunday 26th July 2009

Sunday 30th August 2009

10 am to 4 pm

Newquay Harbour & Towan Beach

The Coastguard will give out free sea safety information and advice from their unit on Towan promenade and the local Newquay Coastguard Cliff Rescue Team will perform a rescue scenario, with a casualty in Mexican fancy dress.

The RNLI lifeguards are on patrol throughout the day on Towan beach and will perform a rescue demonstration to show off their lifesaving skills.  The Beach Safety Event coincides with Newquay’s RNLI lifeboat day and there are all sorts of activities in the harbour with Newquay’s RNLI D Class, and Atlantic 75 lifeboats as well as Padstow’s All Weather Lifeboat.

The Blue Reef Aquarium will give regular talks on the beach and in the town centre featuring a real life weaver fish and describing some of the many marine species that can be found in rock pools around the Cornish coast.

The British Divers Marine Life Rescue use life-sized whales, dolphins and seals to demonstrate the rescue techniques used to free stranded sea mammals. While Gweek Seal Sanctuary, have a stand and an inflatable seal, which was the average size and weight of the real seal cubs they typically rescue and rehabilitate.
